Spielberg to Issue 'Close Encounters' on DVD

Exactly three years after Steven Spielberg released a third new cut of his landmark 1977 film ''Close Encounters of the Third Kind'' on laserdisc, that ''collector's edition'' will be released on DVD May 29.

The director first recut the film and added an ending that took viewers inside the alien spaceship for a theatrical reissue in 1980 called ``Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Special Edition.''

Eleven deleted scenes, many of them already seen in some form in the various cuts of the movie, will be included on the Columbia TriStar Home Video DVD, to be priced at $27.95.

The 137-minute version of the movie will be presented on DVD in 5.1 channel Dolby Digital and DTS sound, as well as two-channel Dolby.

Also included on the DVD will be the 100-minute documentary from the laserdisc in which Spielberg discusses offering the film's lead role to Steve McQueen.
